About the Writer/Director
Hae Seoung Kim is a writer, director, and producer based in Los Angeles and Seoul.
As a social experimentalist, she uses cinema as a means to experiment with society, exploring the dynamics between individuals and social structures through intimate, everyday narratives. Drawing from her lived experience as a Korean American immigrant, she explores artistic values rooted in questions of language and belonging, and pursues a deeply authentic and layered methodology grounded in her navigation of two cultures.
Her four short films as a director and one feature film as a producer illuminate the lives of individuals including members of the Deaf community, former Japanese military “comfort women,” and Korean adoptees. Her work has screened at numerous film festivals, including the Jeonju International Film Festival and the Asian American Film Festival. Her short film Wednesdays received the Student Female Director Award at the Indie Shorts Awards Seoul.
Kim holds an MFA in Film Screenwriting from Columbia University and a BFA in Film Directing from the School of Visual Arts. She is currently developing a feature-length screenplay centered on the lives of a Korean American nomad in the 1990s.
